Academic Skills Tutor

The Academic Skills Tutor will play a pivotal role in enhancing the student experience through the delivery of engaging one-to-one, group and classroom academic skills sessions. These sessions may be face to face, or online and will encompass a diverse range of students from across the University. The post holder will liaise with academic departments, professional services, and the Student Union to promote, monitor and develop academic skills services effectively. This will include attending programme or school meetings, student voice meetings and other relevant forms.

The post holder will also be encouraged to assist in the development of innovative and ambitious ways of providing academic skills support and will ensure that the service is responsive, efficient, and professional at all times.

Working with the Academic Support Manager, and relevant colleagues, you will engage effectively with the University’s Active Learning Framework (ALF), Strategy for Supporting Student Learning and Achievement, and the Digital Enhancement Strategy to ensure consistent delivery of academic skills services across the University.

You are expected to have an excellent academic writing style with the ability to produce a high standard of written reports and other materials, including specific learning resources to underpin academic skills. You will have knowledge of learning development and methods of improving academic skills in higher education. You will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to deliver informative and engaging information literacy / academic skills to diverse groups of students.

The post holder will be a good team player with well-developed interpersonal skills. You will possess good IT skills with a good working knowledge of MS Office, including Teams. Knowledge, understanding and experience of the library and information / academic skills context in the post 16 learning environment is required.
